I think I would separate the tasks. I would first set up an
environment to compile SDL apps, and then once I was satisfied with
that, I would add in SDL_net and make sure that worked, and then
lastly try to add in net2.

For my NewIO project on MS Windows I use MS's free compiler and some
third party libraries (like libssh2), but I use my own networking
code. I have occasionally compiled it with MinGW just to make sure it
works.
