"This book assumes that you know C++ though."

Just for the record thats not true, its mostly written in a C-esque way,
using C++ where it has to. You should have much difficulty understanding it
if you only know C and it will be easy if you know C++.

SDL is great!

If you want a good book to start with, try "Programming Linux Games" by
Loki Software Inc. A very good book that teaches you the fundamentals of
2D game programming and SDL. The book takes you through the various stages
of creating a 2D space fighter called "Penguin Warrior". Even if you don't
use linux, this book will still help you a great deal. The programs that
are in this book are easily ported to windows with little or no
modification.

You can also try "Tricks of the Game Programming Gurus - Fundamentals of
2D and 3D Game Programming" by Andre Lamothe. This book assumes that you
know C++ though. You can find earlier editions of this book that still
teach you in C but won't be as up to date. Still, they'll be a good
learning experience.

Hopes this helps.
