They have another one called something like SAMS teach yourself DirectX game programming in 21 days. It teaches you how to do simple 2D games such as making a chicken cross the road without bing squashed by moving cars. You may want to look into it. It expects you to know a minimum of C++, BUT if you know some C, you should easily be able to understand the code there.
