I bought a book called something like: SAMS teach yourself game
programming in 21 days. They have another one called something like SAMS
teach yourself DirectX game programming in 21 days.

It teaches you how to do simple 2D games such as making a chicken cross
the road without bing squashed by moving cars. You may want to look into
it. It expects you to know a minimum of C++, BUT if you know some C, you
should easily be able to understand the code there.
