SDL stands for "simple directmedia layer". What it is is a multiplatform library that lets you do graphics, sound and input, but also you can grab numerous other libraries to do networking, fonts, collision detection and all sorts of other stuff. It's pretty simple to use and whats really great is that since its available for all major platforms (including playstation 2), you can recompile your game on another OS or hardware type and it'll work (: its very very cool and i use it for all my stuff. heres the URL: http://www.libsdl.org/ heres the URL for tutorials on using SDL as well as tutorials on making games: http://www.libsdl.org/tutorials.php sdl has a mailing list somewhat like this one as well as an irc channel and a huge community. give it a shot, i think you'll be happy (: ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick Letarte" <jr_letarte@hotmail.com> To: <gameprogrammer@topica.com> Sent: Monday, March 29, 2004 7:14 PM Subject: [GP] help getting started =========================================================== Are you looking for savings on products you use everyday? I'm very, very new at programming, but am extremely interested in it and plan to pursue it as a carreer in the future. I know a good amount of C that I have taught myself using books and other resources, but I haven't gotten into C++ or other advanced languages yet. I'm a junior in high school, and plan to take it as independant study next year. Anyway, I recently read a post from someone needing to make a 3D game engine for a 3 pigs and wolf action game. It sounded pretty advanced. I certainly am not advanced. My question is: does anyone know of a good book to help me get started (think EASY) with graphics? All I've found so far are books on 3D graphics programming, which are far too advanced. How about one that might help me make a tetris clone or some other 2D, dos based game? Is this possible in C? Or do I need to move on to C++/Visual C++? I apologize about asking such trivial questions to those of you who obviously know what you're doing. All the talk of DX and GL have me wondering if there's another way to get started with graphics that's easier. Thanks a ton, Dan _________________________________________________________________ All the action. All the drama.
