I've only recently started into game programming myself, so I won't be able
to tell you much.
What I have learned from what I've read so far is that it's best to start
out simple. Try creating something like Asteroids or a clone of that, then
work your way to a side-scroller. The books I'm reading all use Asteroids as
their first example game, because it's simpler to create than a
side-scrolling game.
