What i'd like personally, is the ability to design fleet elements,
warships, following reasonable tech rules, like trading off firepower,
shielding, accel, endurance etc. and then playing admiral as fleets engage.

I'd also like to play captain or gunner on my own ship designs - seems only
fair :)

I'd say Age of Empires comes closest in gameplay to what i'm thinking of -
strategy, tactics and logistics, and every weapon has a weakness.
