An easier, more hassle-free solution is to avoid running any unidentified executable attachments you recieve in your e-mail (particularly if they are poorly disguised as other types of files). AFAIK, this is the only way you can possibly (within reason) get a virus from your e-mail. In Windows, that means *.exe, *.com, *.bat (sort of), *.pif, and *.lnk (I think).
