>Another point to make is that Linux is best to be compared to >Unix-type >OS's. Of course Linux is _best_ to be compared to UNIX. The express written goal of Linux is to be a free UNIX-like OS. What I actually said was that Linux is _better_ compared to NT than DOS in terms of technology level and OS advancement. >An Operating System is just the software which makes things work. Thank you for your Sesame Street definition of operating systems... now that i'm edjikateed in this new-fangled computer junk maybe i can get a job doing some of this dot.commie stuff... >The bios would be the program loader/boot strapper. :) Once again thank you very much for educating me. I have written bootloader code for embedded systems. What I was saying in my comment about DOS being merely an advanced program loader, is that it doesn't provide the resource management one expects of a civilized operating system. It's just a shell that provides a convenient platform to launch programs from. >Heh heh.. and don't compare Linux to NT just because they run on computers >and have Gui's. ;) I'm of the mind to think that NT really can't be >compared to a Unix-type OS in terms of performance, reliability, >scalability, extendibility, etc. (Market share does not equal >quality.) Don't be condescending to me, or think that I don't know my stuff just because I said that Linux's _technology_level_ and advancement are _more_ on the level of NT than DOS. I wasn't comparing Linux to NT because they have GUI's, I was commenting on the underlying system resource management capabilities. And don't lecture me on the quality of Microsoft products versus Free Software. I use Linux everyday at work and home for developement and I help run Linux on embedded systems. Yours with waning patience, Ben. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
