Might be a case of configuration and optimization on the systems in question. It could be that a program to check for performance on the 486 may not be the latest and may not be able to test the full performance capable on a Pentium. But it really depends on what kind of benchmark you are performing. CPU specific or graphics card, etc. My 486dx4-120 beat my old Pentium P166 in most speed tests and such. That is, until the programs being used became more P166 optimized. It also depends on the bus speed as well. The reason my dx120 beat the 166 might have had something to do with a 3x40mhz bus compared to the P166's 5.x x33mhz bus. Just depends on how they might be configured.
