Graphics card detection (80x86)

Hi,

Can somebody please tell me how I could 'ask' the computer which kind of
graphics card is installed? Like in some of the old IBM games. 

What I would like to know from the graphics card, is firstly whether it
supports VGA, and if not, whether it supports EGA, and if not, whether it
supports CGA, and so on.

Can somebody tell me how to do this?
