Pallette of Windows BMP

I am very new to graphics programming. The reply regarding the windows BMP was
Very good and I must thank you for such an informative site ( your site is really good for beginners).

My problem is that I am unable to understand the use of the palette or the color map or the color
Table of the windows BMP. What is the need of this palette, probably what is a palette?
Everything else is quite easy to understand as it has been presented in a very good manner.

I hope that my problem will be solved so that I could continue with the programming.
