Files and Java

Help! I'm playing around with java applications and files, but there are
about ten different classes which deal with files in the java
documentation.  (I know this isn't too game related, but my resident java
guru is out and the list seems to have some java folk) And there's no
malloc either!  Which should I use and how do I allocate a sufficient
buffer to hold my data?
