Hello Ben, Not really if a game is done based on technology it will sell guaranteed. Not graphics, eyecandy is often took apart by game reviwers. These days everything is evaluated heavily. The perfect example of a real life situation and illustration of this fact is that a great graphic game like Quake3 only did not even sell 50,000 copies in its HOT month, a dull graphic game Like RainBow Six is still outselling it. I am a concept designer and i have to implement marketing concepts within my game ideas to help publishers push the product. The only thing graphics do is PUSH the business of 3d card accelerators because people say "WOW i need that CARD" Quake3 did more business for 3d acceleration companies than ID software themselves. Marketing is tricky building a game based on new graphic algorithms is risky and publishers dont like the word risky. Like i said Ben people like to stick to one side of developing in reality marketing is the FIRST step in development before one line of code is written there should be a marketing plan in mind of the concept designer. Everyone is in the OpenGL hardware engine, portal, bsp, octree Phase and they are so determine on making their game look good and their totally ignoring the other facts. If you dont follow a stong marketing plan you will fail ID software fail they have now signed quake3 engine over to Electoronic arts for leasing on console systems now to try to generate funds to break even for the time that q3 had in development. lets hope they implement some new marketing in Doom2000. thanks bryant ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ================================================================= The GameProgrammer.Com mailing list is for the open discussion of any topic related to the art, science, and business of programming games.
