[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] Re: OFF TOPIC QUESTIONS SPOILING LIST
Hi Nicholas, I joined this list to learn about game programming as well. But a good deal of science related questions, mathematical models, and that recent god software thread do have tie ins with game programming. Game programming is about fun, right? Game => fun? Yes? What's the point of hacking out a game when you're tight jawed, sweating bullets for a deadline and can't walk away from that and just enjoy other intellectually stimulating mental pursuits? Inspiration comes from the most unlikely places. And while the religion thread was probably a bit out of bounds, I think the science related questions are valid and acceptable static/noise which contributes in its own way to the healthy discussion of a list. Now.. Apache support... :) If people are asking how to set it up so they can distribute their ideas and source code, then yes, that would contribute to the cause of game programming as well. My point is that it helps to be well rounded and open minded. Sometimes, the solution to your game programming related problem might be found in the answering of another person's less related question. Game programming involves people from a wide variety of fields. Your baseline programming who churns out the code and hopefully debugs it, your QA department(if any) to ensure it works as expected, your artists who designs the game graphics, your modelers who creates the 3d models/game objects, your musicians who helps you create that wonderful soundtrack that sets the mood for the game, the sound effects person who makes things good boom or bump. :) The visonary who has the game idea, but prolly can't code worth thier life, the directory who helps make the vision real, the project managers, etc. etc. (Oh! Don't forget the money and the people who buy the games). It all ties in. Personally, as long as it even hints of game related programming/development, I'll be happy. What I personally consider spam and wasted bandwidth is the porn/chain letter/pyramid scheme posts that seem to permeate the internet these days. So relax, read up on stuff you like. Skip or delete stuff you don't. ^_- Though that's prolly easier for me to say since game programming is sort of a hobby for me and not a career/salary earning issue for me. ^_^;; But noise happens. Some good and some bad. But it helps to break the monotony of a ML and can do wonders to introduce new ideas into what otherwise could be an overly sterile environment. *grins* Now how do I run Linux on that PSX2... wanna run Q3 on it. ^_^; Wing.
