In LInux you would use X-Windows and OpenGL (or actually MESA I am not really sure about the Linux OpenGL situation). Under Windows you would use the WIN 32 API and DirectX for low-level game functions with D3D or OpenGL for graphics. Under windows you have more stability and ease of development. Under Linux you get street cred from your "haxor" buddies. :) Idahosa Edokpayi -----Original Message----- From: gameprogrammer-owner@gameprogrammer.com [mailto:gameprogrammer-owner@gameprogrammer.com]On Behalf Of Matt Campbell Sent: Sunday, March 26, 2000 7:01 PM To: gameprogrammer@gameprogrammer.com Subject: What's up with Linux C/C++ programming? Hey all :) I have some questions about what happens with Linux. If anyone in here uses Linux, maybe they could tell me. I read in some magazine a story on Linux, and the prospect of a free (programming based) OS with open source and free software was very appealing to me. Now, i have been to www.linux.com in search of answers, and have come up with nothing that i didn't get from the story i read. The funny thing is my dad still doesn't think i know what i'm talking about. He came in while i was surfing for info and said "Don't do anything stupid. Linux is another operating system." lol. like i hadn't figured that out already. but, back to my story, I am currently learning game programming in C/C++ from 'Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus' (by Andre Lamoth) and, as you can guess, my predicament lays there in. I would be absolutely lost (even more lost than I am already <lol>) if i switched to Linux. How does programming in C/C++ differ on windows than it does on linux? it's quite confusing. I'll probably neer switch (in the near future, anyway) because all my hard earned software (games, ect.) won't work, but hey. It's sorta interesting. anyone who knows anything about Linux programming in C/C++ maybe drop a line. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
