Dustin, actually I have source for mario (in C). Animation can be very
easily accomplished to.
Say you have a structure called player (same can be applied to classes i
suppose:
Like:
struct player_typ {
int blah;
char etc;
};
All you would have to do is add:
int frame_num;
frame_num would be the current frame and you would display that bitmap or
somesuch accordingly
Now as for 2D vs. 3D,
3D is better than 2D because it creates extremely life like worlds.
Stories can be developed for both 2D and 3D games and i have seen many 3D
games better than 2D and visa-versa. It is the story that
makes or breaks a game, but obviously 3D-ness will sell better and is better
than 2D.
