Carmack is very well respected in the gaming industry.
I dont know where you got your grudge from, but you have things all wrong.
Carmack is respected because he basically started the 3d revolution for
games.
Doom? :)

Sorry but Carmack is the Bill Gates of the Games Industry.
If Carmack said it is just the true and only the true, eh?
The Quake isn't the best 3D engine. Just take a look
to Unreal and Crystal Space engines...
