I work for a company(not related to games) so my work if their property, that is as far from Open Source as can be. that not necesarilly means I don't love programming. In fact I want to change my life to game programming. Basically all work that have some creative stuff on it can be considered a type of art, that involves a great number of aspects including teaching and so basically the same rules applied. If anyone consider that u shoudn't get paid for it, or give all the work knowhow free, then a lot of things will not work. Why? a)Basically because if u work more, u deserve more, and that is IMHO a natural human law, and a lot of people will not want their hundred of ours work to be used by leeches, where for me leeches are people that use your work and -never- gives(not even think of doing it ever) something back to the autor of the work and/or use your work to steal market from u. So some people may decide to not do the job in first place if those are the rules. b) Lots of develoments(probable most) are maid by companies hiring people, the company exists because it will make money, if not, the company wouldn't exist and the development either. That by no means mean u must be greedy or will not cooperate with others. Cooperation and colaboration(including ideas, Code, etc) not necesarily means u need to be open source on all u do, or at the time u do it. So I like when the companies gives away old engines, that's enough to let -anyone- to learn from it. If u want the last tech, then work for it as everybody else, if not, then anyone could arrive mostly at the same time that the one that did the real work with a product far less expensive than he can, so he will be ruined economically, and people need money to live. I like Open Source. I like Colaboration too. But by no means I think is nor desirable neither possible for all the work be open source from the start. After the work is well paid from its revenues, then u can let it be open source. And if u think that u will not do it for the money, then what u do for living?, a non creative work? Personally I dislike them a lot. Almost any creative work has the same rules aplied concerning what we are talking about here.
