[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] RE:SCUMM type engine
Hey, You might want to take a look at Inform and the Text Adventure Development System; these were both scripting languages used to create text adventure games. Inform was used by Infocom to create their games, like Zork and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Planetfall, etc, and TADS is a newer, C-like object-oriented language that was developed in the early 90's. Even though they're not graphical, reading their documentation and looking at some sample games might give you some insight regarding the internal structure of an adventure game. I also remember seeing an "emulator" (or interpreter) for Sierra's old AGI (Adventure Game Interface) datafiles, which is what Sierra's really old games (King's Quest I-III, Gold Rush, Space Quest I & II, etc) were programmed in. I don't know much about SCUMM, but from what you said about it, I think AGI is basically Sierra's ancient analog to SCUMM... If you could find the homepage for that emulator, it's probably got some information about the internal workings of the AGI engine, which would definitely be helpful. That's about all the help I can give... Good luck on your project!
