GRIPES! again ( was Re:How do I get started programming games!!! )

Hi,

I've been on this list from the moment it went live, and I'm really
dissapointed about the decrease in knowledgable posts in the last 2 weeks.
All questions / answers I'm referring to can be put in the following Q&A

- What is the best platform to program games in, DOS or Windows ?
How many commercial DOS games are being sold today ? - Go figure...

- What is the best programming language for developing games ?
If you ask this question, you have a long way to go before being a game
programmer and you should ask yourselve: "Is this really the right place to
be for me at in this point of time ?". To successfully *complete* a game
project you will need all your programming skills you'll ever have and if
you have none, you might want to start your programming career with writing
"Hello World" examples from "Learn C++ in 21 days", then spend a couple of
years or so writing regular appplications.

- Should I use DirectX or OpenGL for my game project.
Again, If you ask this question, you're not ready to start a game project.
Download the appropriate SDK's and look at the examples & sourcecode. Buy a
couple of games that use DirectX or OpenGL or both. See what kind of
effects they give and what hardware is supported, then decide what makes
the difference for you.

- Why do I have this .... compile error.
This question is not about games, and should be asked in a newsgroup such as
comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.misc

- Can someone give me some code to get started on DirectX (Direct3D,
OpenGL, etc.)
Go to www.excite.com and do a search for "+DirectX +Tutorial". You'll be
busy visiting DirectX programming websites for the next month or so.

- How do I use <command> ?
RTFM. If you don't have a manual, search the fucking web. If you can't find
it, ask yourselve: "how related is this problem to games programming ?" If
the <command> is an OpenGL or DirectX function, this is the place to ask.
Otherwise move your question to a usenet newsgroup that deals with the
specific programming language.

- End Q&A.

I have the feeling that, becouse of the increasing "beginners question
flood", some really good programmers that where on this list unsubscribed
from it. That's becouse I don't see them posting anymore. That means that I
won't see anything that I can learn from, or ask questions to, and so I
will eventually move off as well.

I know that the description of this list says "especially tolerant to
beginning game programmers.". I want to make a statement that there is a
difference between being "new to game programming" and "new to programming
in general". I think that anybody that fits in the second cathegory should
not be on this list (no pun intended).

Karel.
