Steve you are correct. I have the introductory version of Visual C++ 6 which I received when I purchased the Game Programming Starter Kit distributed by Macmillan Digital Publishing...can't say how annoyed I was when I realized I had installed a piece of dead wood into my computer...educational yes but otherwise useless.
