First of all, I have to say that I have "hands-on" experience with D3D, but
only theorethical knowledge of OpenGL. Having said that, I can now happely
express my opinion ;=)
For me the choice to work with DX/D3D is based on availability on the PC
platform. D3D may support a given function, whereas OpenGL divers for
3D cards must implement the whole bunch of them. The result of this is that
most 3d card manufaturers have no fully implemented OpenGL driver, not
even 3Dfx (which basically is your target platform if you're aiming at the
PC market). Ofcourse if you're a well known company like ID Software,
you can ask them to write a mini-GL driver that supports the functions that
your game needs, but nobody is going to do that for a company that's just
starting out.
