GP: GameProgrammer: What do you need to know.

I just wanted to find out what you really need to know to be a game coder. 
I'm learning DirectX D3DIM using Visual C++ for a 3D game I'm trying to 
write. I'm not sure if I should be doing anything in ASM or anything else.
